El Abrazo Mural

Join us to celebrate “El Abrazo”, a new addition to Pilsen’s mural legacy, at our Mural Dedication Event and Harvest Festival:

Saturday, October 21st, 12pm – 8pm (Artist presentation at 4:30pm)

El Paseo Community Garden
944 W 21st St. Chicago, IL 60608
(Next to Alivio Medical Center)

This public art project was initiated by the directors of El Paseo Community Garden who envisioned a colossal mural along El Paseo. Paula and Antonio Acevedo assembled the team of local Pilsen artists – Eric J. Garcia, Katia Pérez Fuentes and Diana Solís. The artist team was selected as recipients for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events’ (DCASE) 2017 Year of Public Art 50×50 Neighborhood Arts Project Grant with a matching grant from the 25th Ward. Five teenage apprentices were also hired to join the multi-generational mural team with additional funding from Country Financial. After three months and generous community support, we invite you to celebrate the completion of phase one for “El Abrazo”. This dedication will be hosted in conjunction with El Paseo’s annual Harvest Festival and during the 15th annual Pilsen Open Studios art walk. The event will honor collaborative efforts among artists and community members of the neighborhood. At 4:30 pm, the team will talk about the significance of their community-driven process, the design’s symbolic imagery, and thank all those involved.

El Paseo’s Harvest Festival will run from 12pm to 8pm and will include pumpkin painting, a children’s costume party, dog costume parade, lawn games, music, dance performances, refreshments, and a VIP beer garden. For more details and times click here.
